The common theme for all Project Managers (whatever job / sector) is to ensure that projects progress efficiently, to budget and on time. This should always be reflected in a Project Manager's resume / CV. Recruiters will always look for project managers whose projects have been brought in under or on budget and on or ahead of time. These aspects should therefore play a major part in your resume / CV.

Profile for a Project Manager's CV / resume

• The Profile on your resume should be a quick outline for recruiters and prospective companies of your proven project management qualities.
• If you've consistently brought projects back on schedule, or been able to bring projects in on time, your Profile can reflect this.
• As a Project Manager, your communication skills will be developed and you may have the ability to talk to all levels of staff including the senior management team; use the Profile to detail this.
• You can also use your Profile to detail the types of projects you managed; an example of this is "proven ability to successfully manage large and complex IT programs". If you have managed one large project, say so or if you have had more success doing a mixture of business analysis and project management, it's also important to say this.
• You should also use the Profile to set out which formal project planning and evaluation techniques you use or have used; feel free to say that you use network analysis, PERT, critical path analysis or Gantt charts.
• Perhaps project management software can also go under this heading; 'Proficient in MS Project' is a simple fact and takes up little space but gives the information which is needed.
• If you have a Project Management qualification, then use the Profile to show this and then put further details under Qualifications further down your resume / CV; this is so it shows on both the first and second pages and does not get lost under the Qualifications section.

You may think that the above suggestions may lead to a very lengthy Profile on your resume / CV, however, follow the rules and it doesn't have to end up being an essay. Here's an IT project manager resume example:

An adaptable and successful Software Development Project Manager with experience across multiple and varied projects in the IT industry. Excellent knowledge of MS Project, TQM, PERT and a Prince 2 Practitioner. Supreme communication skills with a proven ability to work with all levels of customer and staff. Enjoys working in a varied role with an element of business analysis, project management and end-user coordination.

Major Achievements for a Project Management Resume / CV

• This section is pretty self-explanatory. You use this part of your resume / CV to illustrate a few examples of your successes as a Project Manager. Ignore all other major achievements, simply concentrate on detailing between three and five major achievements in your project manager capacity.
• If you managed to save a company a substantial amount of money, then say so. Employers and recruiters want to see examples of quantitative success. E.g. Implemented new software development project ahead of schedule, saving the company 20,000 in development and implementation costs.
• One of the core skills of a successful Project Manager is ensuring that risks or problems are identified, managed and mitigated. You can use this skill to illustrate one of your Major Achievements. Employers and recruiters would like to see not only that you're aware of this need, but that you have already succeeded in preventing problems.
• Another great example to discuss in this section is the ability to troubleshoot. Sometimes Project Managers are brought on board a particular project because it has run into problems such as running late or being way over budget. If you were responsible for getting the project back on track, use this section to say so.
• Leadership skills are also vital so if you have been responsible for multinational or multisited teams, then add this under your Major Achievements.

Experience for a Project Manager Resume / CV

• Use this section on your resume / CV to give further details to the projects you mentioned in the Major Achievements section. Even though you have already highlighted a few assignments, you can also give further details here and add new ones too.
• Feel free to include additional details such as personal budgetary responsibilities, your proven ability to recruit project staff and manage teams of 10 people across four offices in three countries.
• Ensure the reader knows that you are up to date and fully understand new and emerging project management methodologies.
• If you have managed a variety of projects simultaneously, then make sure you outline this in this section of your resume.

Education, Qualifications & Further Training

• Use this section to highlight industry and job-specific qualifications. So if you are a Project Manager in the engineering industry and your degree was in Mechanical Engineering, use this section to show this.
• Any project management relevant courses can also go here so if you did a two day Microsoft Project course, then add it here.
