Job site: Career Builder Canada
As far as looks go, this is one of the most attractive, clear and organised job sites on the web.
The home page presents you with a number of options, without the visual distraction of numerous adverts or employer links that you'll run into on other sites.
If all you want to do is a quick search, that is made easy for you, as the design values mean your eye is first drawn to the search fields - keyword, location and job category.
When the job results appear, you can view additional information about specific jobs in one of two ways.
- Click on the company name in the results and you can view a page with company details and links to other vacancies with the same company (categorised by location).
- Or, click on the job title for a full job description. Presented in a table format, this also provides an overview and checklist of job requirements, so you can see at a glance whether you cut it as a candidate - or not.
You can apply immediately by email or submit an online application via the site, uploading or pasting your resume.
Register on Career Builder?
Register for the site and you can save your searches as job alerts, so you'll receive emails telling you when new jobs are posted that match your criteria. You can also upload you resume so it can be viewed by employers.
The site suggests this is a good to reach the 'hidden jobs market', as it will be viewed by employers who are not currently advertising. You can also opt to have your resume sent to recruiters in your industry field.
Additional Resources on CareerBuilder.ca
The Career Advice section is packed with articles covering all aspects of working, finding work and losing jobs. These are lightweight and easy to read, with lots of lists and quick self-evaluation quizzes.
If you are looking for a complete guide to writing your resume and submitting applications, these will probably be too brief to be helpful, but you may find useful pointers within them, nevertheless.

Information for recruiters / HR / employers:
The landing page for employers gets straight to the point: online fees for one job posting are CA$489 for 30 days, while four jobs costs CA$1492, a saving of 20% over the period (the four posts can be advertised over the course of 12 months). You can edit your advert for as long as it is on the site. If you are interested in different packages, you will need to register and speak to a sales representative by phone.
Register as a member and the site's offerings become visible. (It isn't clear why you must submit your email address in order to do this, so the assumption must be that the site is gathering your data for promotional purposes.) Resume database access starts at CA$900, enabling you to view up to 300 resumes per day, having conducted a highly targeted search. You can save 10% by buying resume access at the same time as posting one or more jobs. You can also manage applications via the site and build a company profile to be viewed by job seekers
Additionally, you can receive information services in the form of CareerBuilder Customer Messages (news of special offers and new offerings by email) and a Monthly Newsletter (news of forthcoming CareerBuilder events and products).
The registration niggle aside, it is hard to fault the functionality of this site. However, there is a single but overriding concern - what proportion of the totals given for jobs and resumes posted are specific to Canada? At the moment, we must speculate that this is not high and that the vast majority are US-based. The lack of available statistical information does nothing to change this perception. Indeed, the About Us page focuses instead on a rather Zen-like mission statement - commendable, but hardly relevant to potential advertisers. Instead, you must contact the sales team and yield your contact details if you wish to know more.
